And so we see that Adam begins participating in creation. He decides what his reality will be. He decides what he will allow to have power over him. He decides his mood and his actions.

Keep in mind that the archetypes as I have described them here are a very abbreviated synopsis of the four archetypes, there have been whole books written on each of these archetypes alone, and I would encourage you to read them for a more comprehensive understanding. The series of books by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette on the topic of these archetypes; are brilliant. Throughout the series they bring up various myths and I would encourage you to read those myths and understand their lessons.

Because the balancing of these archetypes can be a bit tricky, the books by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette are the only ones I would recommend at this time. Moore points out that a psychologist can receive training as a Jungian analyst and get an idea of what constitutes the four archetypes, but, unless you have been through this transformation, the archetypes’ contents can be a bit of a mystery to you.

If there is one issue I have with Robert Moore’s books it’s that they talk about all of this in terms of the male psyche. I don’t think the female psyche is any different in terms of these basic concepts.

We can either live these four archetypes in their fullness or we can live the shadows of these archetypes or some combination of the two, but we also project these archetypes or their shadows onto other people or things as extroverts. A glaring example of this projection, and one that Moore uses because it’s so obvious, is codependency in a relationship. Let’s say this relationship is between a man and a woman just for sake of clarity and differentiation, but it could be a same-sex relationship; it doesn’t really matter. You may have a man within a relationship that is lacking in the lover, while the woman has incorporated this into the psyche. He then allows this woman to hold that energy for him. He projects that aspect of himself onto her. Within that same relationship you may have a woman who is lacking the warrior. So, she projects that aspect of herself onto him so he can hold it for her. He doesn’t need to be the lover because she is, and she doesn’t need to be the warrior because he is. Too often this is a perfect match made in hell.

We’ve all heard couples talk about how they complete each other. Nobody should be completing anyone. We should be complete in ourselves. Where things go right in this situation is that this doesn’t have to be dysfunctional. We often are attracted to others that have cultivated qualities we have not cultivated within ourselves. This is what attraction is. In this way you can begin to cultivate within yourself the qualities that attracted you to that person. You become those qualities in observing how that person has cultivated them.
